District
Calendar -
New Addition To The APS Website
|
|
The Alamogordo Public
School system is pleased to announce the addition of an online
District
Calendar to the APS website. The calendar gives parents, students,
the community, and APS personnel access to up-to-date information on
district-wide events. This user friendly calendar is highly adaptable.
Calendar information can be sorted and viewed in variety of ways. You
can select to view all information in one comprehensive calendar, or you can narrow the focus and view only information for a
specific school, department, or event. Additional settings
give you the option to view calendar information by
day, week, or month.
The
District Calendar can be viewed by clicking on Students and
Parents in the main menu at the top of any page on the APS
website and then clicking on District Calendar in the
drop down menu.

Facilities
Town Hall Meetings
As a direct result of the January 2008 district needs
assessment, the Alamogordo Public Schools scheduled two town hall
meetings regarding facilities within the school district.
The first meeting was held on Monday, June 30, 2008 at 6:30 p.m.
The second meeting was on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 6:30 p.m at
at the Sgt. Willie Estrada Civic Center at the corner of
Florida and First Street.
Superintendent Mike Harris has identified four key
questions the public needs to answer before any type of construction
occurs. They include:
|
-
How does the
community want their schools structured?
-
What is the
capacity and structural condition of current school facilities?
-
What is the
bonding capacity of the Alamogordo Public Schools?
-
What will
the community support regarding remodeling, additions and/or new
construction?
|
|
|
|
During
the first meeting on June 30, Superintendent Mike Harris gave an
overview of facilities planning and facilitated discussion regarding the
current organizational structure of district schools. Organizational
structure is a key component of facilities planning. The structure of
schools directly affects decisions regarding remodeling current
buildings as well as construction of new learning facilities. The second
meeting focused on input regarding the direction the district should
take regarding facility upgrades, remodeling, and/or construction of new
buildings.
The input received from the public during these meetings will help guide
the district in developing a facilities master plan which must be
approved by the Alamogordo Public School Board of Education and
submitted to the Public School Facilities Authority for review and the
Public School Capital Outlay Council for acceptance before possible
funding sources, including general obligation bonds for construction,
can be identified.

Thanks For the Opportunity
By: Mike Harris, Superintendent
As we start the new school year, I wanted to
take the opportunity to thank parents and the community for
allowing us to be a part of your student’s life. While we can
never make everyone happy, I assure you every decision is as
carefully thought out as we can make it. And yes, believe it or
not, we do make mistakes. But the good thing about mistakes is
that they can be rectified. We have tried to be as open as we
can with decisions and to listen to every side. My door,
schedule permitting, is open every Wednesday at 5 pm, in the
Board Room. If I cannot be there, I will place a sign on the
door, and ask you to call my secretary for an appointment.
Please come by if you have a problem that has not been solved.
There are many issues we will be dealing with this year – the
master plan for facilities, curriculum improvement, autism
programs for different age students, cyber academy, career and
technology, and many more. These all have the potential to have
a profound effect on our district and, with your input, can be
navigated successfully. Again, thank you for allowing us to work
with your students. I promise we’ll do our best.
